| The Davos Countryside – how Davos should really be called – consists of the main centre plus various smaller localities. These areas are still very quaint and traditional and well worth a visit. Wolfgang At the Wolfgang Pass the Landwassertal valley reaches its highest point, to be precise 1631 m. This elevation used to be called “Stütz”. From here beautiful walks lead direct to Lake Davos or into the nearby forests. Within 10 minutes you can be in Riedmatt or it takes you about 45 minutes to walk up to the Drusatscha, from where you can enjoy the fantastic view over the Lake. Clavadel Clavadel is one of the sunniest areas in the region. It is easy to get to Clavadel via a choice of pretty walks or hiking paths, for example, starting from Davos via Bolgen or from Jschalp (Jakobshorn) through the Spinnelenwald forest. Clavadel is well known for its cheesemaking show farm which is up on the Clavadeler Alp: here you can personally experience, just how the local spicy Clavadel mountain cheese is made. Frauenkirch Named after the well-known chapel of „Our Lady“ the hamlet Frauenkirch is found tucked down between the Rinerhorn and the Jakobshorn. This pre-reformist church was built in 1350. It sits up picturesquely on a hill, protected against avalanches by a cleft on two sides and adorned in the local style with an octagonal wooden spire. Above Frauenkirch is the Stafelalp, where the famous expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent a lot of his time during the summer months of 1917 and 1918. Glaris Glaris faces east on the slopes of the Rinerhorn, in the middle of a splendid skiing and hiking area. The traditional Walser farmhouses which are well spread out show signs even today of the culture of the Walser, who first settled here in the 13th century. The present day church of St. Nikolaus was built in 1350. At that time it was dedicated to St. Christopher. Just 20 minutes walk from Glaris is the little Walser settlement, Spina at a height of 1587m. From this sunny spot one has a most beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. Monstein A real jewel is the idyllic little village of Monstein. This old Walser settlement, with its old wooden houses and the almost 350 years old barn on stilts, where the grain was stored, is a popular place for outings. Also well worth a visit is the silver mine, which was in operation from 1806 to 1848. You can go round the mine, its tunnels and its museum. Laret In Laret which lies on the other side of the Wolfgang Pass one will find the original „Schweizer Dörfli“ (little Swiss village) with a chapel built in 1793. Also the Lake Schwarzsee is very popular with both the locals and the tourists in summer due to its water temperature of 23 degrees. |
